Rainfall warning in effect across Metro Vancouver; use caution around rivers

If you are planning on heading outside Sunday, think about grabbing an umbrella.

A rainfall warning is in effect across Metro Vancouver and parts of the South Coast, stretching all the way from Squamish through to Hope.

Up to 60 millimetres of rain is expected through Sunday into the evening.

“A moisture laden Pacific frontal system will reach the South Coast this morning bringing heavy rain to the aforementioned regions,” Environment Canada said.

“The rain will begin early this morning and then intensify this afternoon.”

The weather service warns that flash floods and water pooling on roads are possible. Rain is expected to ease to showers early Monday.

Be careful around Metro Vancouver rivers, says regional district

Be extremely cautious around Metro Vancouver rivers right now.

That’s the message from the Metro Vancouver Regional District, which is urging people to keep their distance from the Capilano and Seymour Rivers, warning that today’s storm will lead to higher flows.

Metro Vancouver says the rivers are dynamic and dangerous, particularly the Capilano River, where water levels can rise more than 5 metres in height, coupled with currents that move as fast as 21 kilometres an hour.

People are warned not to enter the rivers or areas near the rivers that are marked as dangerous.
