IIO investigating Vancouver crash that left suspect, officers hurt

B.C.’s police oversight agency is looking into a crash involving the VPD and a stolen vehicle that left a suspect and several officers hurt last week.

Police previously said officers spotted a stolen car in the area of East 35th Avenue and Knight Street around 1:30 a.m. on June 7. Shortly after, the vehicle was around Cambie Street and West 37th Avenue, which is where police claim the car collided with two VPD cruisers, injuring the officers.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) explains that “officers attempted to stop” the vehicle, resulting in its crash with two police cruisers. The crash left the suspect driver with “an injury to one arm,” while their passenger was uninjured.

The suspect was arrested, with police saying charges were being recommended.

The IIO, however, will now “seek to clarify the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the collision and whether police action or inaction played a role.”

The watchdog is asking anyone with information or video footage to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or online at iiobc.ca.
