Fire crews knock down South Vancouver blaze; one person suffers smoke inhalation

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service says it extinguished a fire in a building at the foot of Cambie Street near SW Marine Drive Saturday.

Assistant Chief of Operations Brad Hesse says crews were called to the blaze, which was located in a building in the area, around 11 a.m.

“Crews found some black smoke coming out of the one end of what appears to be an abandoned townhouse complex that was all boarded up and fenced at the time,” Hesse said.

“Flames were coming out of the one end of the roof.”

Crews saw one person leaving the building when they got there, and they spoke to locals on the scene who said people had been coming and going from the structure.

Once they were safely inside, firefighters found someone inside the building, he says.

“They were able to quickly knock down most of the fire with a fast attack when they were safely able to enter the building,” Hesse said.

“They did find one person inside the building that was stuck in a wall cavity. They were able to rescue that person out, no signs of any severe burns or anything, but they did suffer smoke inhalation and were treated and taken to hospital by BC Ambulance.”

The flames were out by around 2:30 p.m., Hesse says.

He went on to say that the incident had caused traffic issues in the area, but these were resolved by early afternoon.
