New Westminster police shut down residential streets Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call about a suspected explosive device in the city’s West End neighbourhood.
The New Westminster Police Department says officers arrived on scene and asked residents to leave the area “out of an abundance of caution.”
Portions of Hamilton Street, Kingston Street, 13th Street, and 14th Street were closed to traffic for several hours.
The department says it worked in partnership with the BC RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit to safely remove the object.
“We’re in the early stages of this investigation, so residents can expect to see us working in the area into the evening,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver.
Police say if you have any information to share about the suspected explosive device, you can call 604-525-5411.
