Former Surrey mayor Linda Hepner to run for BC Conservatives

A big name from municipal politics is going to run for the BC Conservatives.

The party has announced former Surrey mayor Linda Hepner as its candidate in the new riding of Surrey-Serpentine River.

Hepner, who appeared in a video with party leader John Rustad to make the announcement Thursday, says she’s coming out of retirement to help young people, specifically her five grandchildren.

“When I heard and I read that one of every two young people are looking to leave this province, that really struck a chord with me,” she said.

“That means I’m missing two and a half of them. That’s not good.”

Hepner also says she is concerned about the province’s declining credit rating.

“You can’t offer services if you don’t have a good, strong investment climate,” she said.

“When I see our rating was downgraded, not once, but twice, that’s not good either. So I’m here to make a difference.”

Hepner was mayor of Surrey from 2014 to 2018. Prior to that, she was a city councillor from 2005 until 2014.

The provincial election is set for Oct. 19.
