The Richmond RCMP says several drivers have been charged and fined after an undercover investigation into illegal ride-sharing operations.

Police conducted a “targeted enforcement” two weeks ago to identify and stop unlicensed ride-hailing drivers who use unauthorized apps to operate throughout B.C.

Mounties say approximately six drivers received 25 charges in total, including driving without a license, using the wrong class of driver’s license, failing to display a valid vehicle inspection certificate, and operating a business without a license.

The Richmond RCMP says one of the drivers was apprehended for the fourth time since 2021. Another had already been stopped once this year.

“Unlicensed ride-hailing services pose significant risks to public safety due to the lack of proper vetting, including background checks and vehicle inspections. We are warning the public of the inherent risks of using unauthorized apps, which include unlicensed and uninsured drivers,” said Sgt. Eric Baskette.

A reported $18,458 in total fines were issued to the drivers.
