Lower Mainland construction material union issues 72-hour strike notice

It’s the material that keeps our construction industry going, but a strike that would affect the Lower Mainland’s supply of concrete is looming.

The union behind a significant strike that impacted the Lower Mainland’s construction industry two years ago, issued a 72-hour strike notice at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday.

“This action comes after eight months of negotiations, with the last month involving the assistance of Mediator Dave Schaub,” Teamsters Local 213 representative Barry Capozzi told CityNews.

In an unofficial statement, Heidelberg Teamsters — some members of Teamsters Local 213 who work at Heidelberg Materials — took to social media Tuesday, saying the key issues include pay, job security, and ensuring what the union members call “stable retirement” for its workers. The union members are accusing the company of “corporate greed.”

The union members say the demands are fundamental rights for the workers.

“@HD_Materials just reported their most profitable year ever … and yet they refuse to take care of the workers that made them those record profits,” the post on social media claimed.

Heidelberg Materials is said to provide roughly one-third of the region’s concrete supply and the last strike against it went for five weeks.

CityNews has reached out to Teamsters Local 213 and Heidelberg Materials for more information.
