Victim set on fire during series of serious incidents Friday, says Surrey RCMP

The Surrey RCMP is investigating a serious assault during which the victim was set on fire. The suspect fled in a stolen Mini Cooper, which has since been found.

Police say they are investigating a series of serious incidents in Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood, and the Surrey RCMP has confirmed that the victim was set on fire.

Just after 1 p.m. Friday, Mounties were called out after a report of a serious assault on City Parkway near 102 Avenue. When they got to the area, they found the victim suffering serious injuries.

“Surrey RCMP can confirm the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim by throwing an accelerant on his body and proceeded to light him on fire. The victim suffered serious burns to his body,” police said in an update Saturday afternoon. “The victim remains in hospital and is recovering.”

The detachment’s Serious Crime Unit has over the investigation, the update says.

“Officers are working diligently to explore all avenues of the investigation, including the determination of the motive of this assault.”

Police say that after they reached the scene, the suspect then stole a vehicle and drove away. The vehicle has since been recovered.

“Police remains in the area and are actively looking for the suspect,” Mounties said in a news release.

“The investigators are examining the scene, speaking with witnesses, and canvassing the neighbourhood for CCTV footage. The investigation is still in the early stages and police are working to determine the motive.”

The suspect is described as being between 25 and 30 years old with a moustache, black pants, a black grey hoodie with black arms, and a green baseball cap with “Cariboo” written on it.

The vehicle, a White Mini Cooper with black stripes and black rims, was located later, the police announced Saturday morning.

Anyone with any information about the incident, including the suspect’s location, is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2024-113412.

The RCMP says if you see the suspect, do not approach him and call 911.
