Rainfall warning issued for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley

Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are under a rainfall warning, with nearly 50 milimetres of rain expected Friday night into Saturday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says the rain and weather alert are due to a low-pressure system off the Oregon Coast moving inland and across southern B.C.

1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Carl Lam says the wet Friday morning is really just the beginning.

“You can expect more rain and a few isolated thunderstorms as we go through the rest of your Friday. But it really is [Friday] night, as we get closer to midnight, when that rain really will start to pick up. It will be very steady, at times, and continuing into Saturday morning, before this starts to ease as we go toward about 1 to 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon,” said Lam.

Environment Canada says with the heavy rain, you should be on the lookout for possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts, and localized flooding in low-lying areas. 

For drivers, the weather alert adds, “Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

“As we go toward the afternoon, things will start to dry out,” said Lam about Saturday.

“We’re not expecting a ton of sunshine, though, and temperatures still will be cool — just getting up into the upper teens for those daytime highs. Sunday is certainly the nicer of the two weekend days. We’re expecting dry conditions, sun and cloud, and temperatures getting up to about 20 degrees, but then it [will still be] cool as we head into next week.”
