B.C.'s police oversight agency has been deployed to Richmond after an officer was stabbed and a man was shot Thursday night.

B.C.’s police oversight agency has been deployed to Richmond, after an officer was stabbed and a man was shot by Mounties Thursday night.

The BC RCMP says the Richmond RCMP received a request for assistance by firefighters after a man allegedly set a sign on fire in front of a home along Glenthorne Drive.

Police say the man was “uncooperative,” adding a struggle between him and officers led to the stabbing and subsequent shooting.

“The man and police officer were both transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services to be treated for what are believed to be serious injuries,” the BC RCMP said in a release Friday.

As of Friday morning, police tape up remained up around a home in the Southarm area. A sign that appears to have been burned was also seen on the front yard.

Neighbours in the area tell CityNews they heard shots and saw the sign on fire. They say about 20 emergency vehicles lined the street including ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles.

The Richmond RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit has been tasked with investigating the initial call and assault of the officer.

Meanwhile, the Independent Invesigations Office (IIO) will be looking into police actions that led to injury of the man.

The IIO is deployed anytime someone is badly hurt or injured in an interaction with police.
