Sicamous bridge on Hwy 1 reopens, a day after semi-truck crashes through railing, plunges into water; driver not yet found

The RW Bruhn Bridge on Highway 1 in Sicamous has reopened, a day after a semi-truck crashed off the side and plunged into the water below.

The driver has not yet been located.

The RCMP says it responded to the report of the incident just before 7 a.m. Saturday.

Police say the truck, which had been heading east, fell 60 feet into the river.

Mounties believe the driver was the only occupant, and no other vehicles were involved.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says a dive team has been called in to work on recovery.

BC Emergency health Services says it was called to the scene shortly after it happened.

“Two ground ambulances were dispatched to the location,” BC EHS said.

“Paramedics did not transport any patients to hospital.”

Police at the time said the bridge will stay closed “until it can be made safe,” but it has since been reopened.

The CSRD says the Sicamous Fire Rescue has reported people entering the lake to retrieve objects from the truck.

“We ask that the public do not go into the water near the accident scene and avoid the area so emergency crews can work,” it said.

The district says it appears that diesel fuel has spilled into the water.

“A dangerous goods spill report has been made to the Ministry of Environment.”

Photos shared with CityNews show a section of the guard railing dangling over the edge and rescue boats below the bridge.
