Port Coquitlam looking for Terry Fox memorabilia for interactive display

City of Port Coquitlam is asking residents to contribute memories to an interactive exhibit set to open next year, honouring Terry Fox. This comes as people across the country prepare for the annual Terry Fox run. Lauren Stallone reports.

The City of Port Coquitlam is asking residents to contribute memories to an interactive exhibit set to open next year, honouring one of its most famous former citizens: Terry Fox.

An interactive display called ‘Terry Fox: Inspiring Local Champions’ will open at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre in 2024. The display is designed to celebrate Fox’s legacy and “highlight the values of community, resilience, and athletic achievement.”

The city sent an invitation to residents Wednesday, asking them to submit photos, videos, and objects that highlight Fox’s time growing up in Port Coquitlam during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Mayor Brad West says the goal is to create as meaningful a display as possible.

“I believe that the personal memories, photos, and items contributed by those who knew him will provide a heartfelt and authentic tribute to his legacy,” said West.

The city is reportedly collaborating with the Fox Family and PoCo Heritage to collect additional memorabilia from the community, including loaned items, to enrich a series of what it says will be displays that change on a rotating basis.

“We truly hope this will inspire the youth of Port Coquitlam to never, ever give up and go after their dreams with courage and determination,” said Darrel Fox on behalf of his brother’s surviving family.

Residents can contribute or loan items that reflect Terry Fox’s early life and influence online by Sept. 27.

Those who prefer to make an in-person submission can book appointments via email at info@pocoheritage.org or by phoning 604-927-8403.

The next annual Terry Fox Run is scheduled for Sept. 15, with events taking place all over Canada and internationally.
