Blaze causes ‘major damage’ to Vancouver heritage home Saturday, fire crews say

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) says a blaze at a heritage home on West 10th Avenue and Columbia Street Saturday has caused “major damage.”

As of noon, the fire was still an active operation.

“Crews arrived on scene, found trees in the backyard of this residence on … Columbia on fire,” Assistant Chief of Operations Jarret Gray said.

Flames extended into the house and crews attempted to go inside, he says.

“And at this time, we are still attacking the house. Fire got inside the house, into the structure of the house.”

Gray says it isn’t clear if the home will be a total loss.

“I can’t make that comment for certain, but there’s definitely major damage to the house,” he said.

VFRS says no one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators are on scene, Gray says.
