One man is dead and another was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a Ford F350 crashed through a bus stop bench in Surrey Saturday afternoon.
Mounties say they were called out to the area of the bus stop on 144th Street near Hyland Drive after receiving a report of a “fatal motor vehicle collision” around 4:30 p.m.
The truck was travelling north on 144th Street when it crossed into oncoming traffic.
“The vehicle then collided with a bus stop bench injuring two pedestrians and causing damage to the surrounding property,” Sgt. Kimball Matsumoto said.
“One 33-year-old male was declared deceased at the scene. A second male in his 30’s received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.”
Sgt. Chris Rook-Green tells 1130 NewsRadio the injured person sustained a broken leg, and a third person escaped injury.
Local resident Cameron Power says he was sitting in his living room when the collision happened.
“I’m sitting in my living room, and I heard a massive, massive bang, and I ran outside and looked down the road,” Power said.
“The truck that hit the bus stop ended up in the house behind the bus stop, and it’s in the front yard, crashed into the house of the behind the bus stop on 67 and 144th.”
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and was arrested when the RCMP arrived.
“Drugs and speed have not been ruled out as contributing factors in this collision,” Matsumoto said.
“The incident is still under investigation.”
