BC NDP promises new sports facility in Port Coquitlam

The BC NDP says it’s committed to building a covered, multi-sport facility in Port Coquitlam if re-elected on Saturday.

Speaking in Port Coquitlam Tuesday afternoon, Party Leader David Eby promised a $3 million investment in a “state-of-the-art” building to accommodate ball hockey, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and badminton, with a special focus on lacrosse.

“This facility will be built and designed to ensure that the fast growing sport of lacrosse is supported right here in Port Coquitlam and kids get to play every single day of the year,” said Eby.

Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West appeared alongside Eby Tuesday to share his support for the initiative.

“With a proposed location on the north side in place of the current bike park — which will be relocated and revitalized — this facility will be second to none,” said West, adding that it will also include lighting, seating, change rooms, washrooms, and storage along with the covered sports area.

He says a new space would relieve demand on Port Coquitlam’s existing arenas.

Advance voting for the provincial election will continue until Wednesday, Oct. 16. The final voting date is Saturday, Oct. 19.
