Darker days prompt safety reminder for Metro Vancouver drivers, pedestrians
As B.C.’s South Coast firmly enters fall, the Surrey RCMP wants to make sure you’re safe out on the roads.
Corp. Sarbjit Shangha says if you’re a pedestrian, reflective clothing could save your life.
“Especially when it’s dark and it’s raining, drivers not going to see you if you’re wearing all dark [clothing]. Even if it’s a backpack, you can put something reflective on it. It is so important,” she explained.

While fall officially started back in September, B.C. will see the “fall back” and end of Daylight Saving Time this Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 a.m. Metro Vancouver will then see the sunset around 4:45 p.m.
Sangha adds that pedestrians should try to make eye contact with drivers and take extra time to make sure cars are fully stopped before crossing the road.
“Even if it’s your turn to cross the street, make sure that the driver actually has stopped and you are safely able to cross the street,” she explained.
“Not paying attention to your surroundings can put you at risk. Make sure your headphones are off when you’re crossing the street, and you’re not on your phone. It is your life, it is important that you take precautions.”

As for drivers, she’s reminding you to slow down, keep your lights on — both headlights and brake lights — and be extra vigilant for pedestrians.
