Vancouver man charged after Downtown Eastside summer homicide

A Vancouver man has been charged in relation to a homicide in the city’s Downtown Eastside in August.

Details of the incident are still scarce, but the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says officers were called to the area of Main Street and East Hastings Street for reports of a man in “critical medical condition” around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.

Const. Tania Visintin said the man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Around 5:30 p.m. that day, the VPD said the victim died from his injuries, and police were investigating the incident as a homicide.

Visintin did not confirm whether the incident was a stabbing, nor if a weapon was used.

“Investigators believe the suspect and victim knew each other. There is no public safety risk at this time,” Visintin said in a statement in August.

In an update Wednesday, the VPD says the BC Prosecution Service has approved one count of second-degree murder against a 43-year-old Vancouver man.

Police say the victim was 23-year-old Jordan Povse.

The suspect is due to appear in court on Nov. 25.
