Crews were kept busy fighting a blaze that damaged a single-family residence and a vehicle and sent two people to hospital in Chilliwack.
In a release Wednesday, the Chilliwack Fire Department says it happened at a home near the intersection of Briteside Rd and Sherlaw Rd just after 3 p.m.
They say while en route to the scene they “identified a visible column of smoke. That, along with caller information, prompted an immediate upgrade to a second alarm.”
A second alarm called for “Firefighters from Halls 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6” to come support on site, who then encountered smoke and flames coming from the home.
Fire crews say there were two occupants in the home who managed to evacuate, but had sustained injuries.
The injuries are not specified but crews say BC Emergency Health Services were called to “care for the occupants, who were later transported to the hospital.”
No injuries to firefighters were reported.
Firefighters say two family pets also made it out of the home and “one has been accounted for, while the other is still loose in the area.”
“Although we are unable to confirm the exact breed, we believe it to be a retriever,” it said in a statement.
The Chilliwack Fire Department urges anyone who sees a loose dog in the area to contact Animal Control at 1-844-495-2273.
Crews say they were able to contain the fire to the building and a single vehicle and victim services, Emergency Support Services and the RCMP were all called to the location to provide support.
They say the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the fire department.
