New Westminster police continue ‘bait package’ program to deter doorstep theft

Police in New Westminster say they are stepping up their efforts to combat parcel theft as a busy holiday shopping season begins.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is bringing back its “bait package” program for the third year.

Designed to “prevent thefts and ensure families enjoy a worry-free festive season,” the program helps police trick thieves into carrying away a disguised high-tech parcel that can track their location to help identify suspects.

The NWPD says community members volunteer to host the bait packages on their doorsteps and in their mailboxes, so there’s no telling which could be real.

“Thieves should think twice before grabbing something off a porch, especially during this busy season,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “Our bait packages are out there, and we’re ready.”

To further reduce the opportunity for theft, police encourage residents to also take the following steps:

  • Speak with neighbours to keep an eye on deliveries.
  • Have packages delivered to a secure location, such as a workplace or a designated pickup locker.
  • Retrieve packages and check mailboxes promptly.

Residents interested in hosting a bait package themselves are encouraged to email communications@nwpolice.org for more information.
