“The Brentwood Community Centre represents an important piece in the evolution of one of the fastest-growing neighbourhoods in Burnaby,” Mayor Mike Hurley said in a statement on Wednesday.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to create a gathering place for neighbours to connect and be active right in the heart of Brentwood.”

According to the city, the new development will house a fitness centre, gym, running track, weight room, multi-purpose rooms, and indoor play areas.

The building will sit on the north side of Dawson Street, between Alpha and Beta avenues.

Expected to be completed in 2029, the development is slated to cost approximately $146.3 million.

“The project will primarily be funded through the City’s Community Benefit Bonus Reserve, which is money collected from developers in exchange for additional density in our town centres,” the city explained.
