“A passenger in the vehicle that was struck, an adult woman, passed away despite life-saving measures at the scene,” said police.
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton tells 1130 NewsRadio that the victim was a “elderly woman,” and it appears no one else was injured in the crash.
Images from the scene show a taxi van and pickup truck collided. Police have not yet confirmed which vehicle struck the other, nor which was occupied by the victim.
The SPS says the driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene of the collision and is cooperating with investigators.
Houghton says it’s still too early to determine the cause of the incident.
“At this time, everything is sort of still on the table in terms of what may have contributed,” he said.
If you witnessed the collision or have any information, including dashcam footage, you’re asked to call SPS at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2024-181644 (SU).
Around 3:45 p.m., DriveBC said the roads had been reopened in all directions.
The SPS is reminding you to drive with care today, given unfavourable driving conditions.
“We’re expecting some pretty severe weather hit the south coast. It’s already started this afternoon in some areas. We’ve seen this a few times in the last month, whenever that wind and the rain combined water be very poor,” said Houghton.
“We’re urging caution if you’re out driving today. Today could be a very busy day on the roads. People are going to Christmas dinners, and those kinds of things. Please slow down. Get to your destination safe. We don’t want to have to attend another serious collision today.”
