A downtown Vancouver nightclub known for its witty signage has gone viral — which in turn has led to one of its social media accounts being suspended.
“Forever neighbours, never neighbors,” reads the Penthouse Night Club’s exterior marquee, with the second word dropping the letter ‘U,’ as the word is spelled south of the border.
This is a direct reference to Donald Trump’s ongoing threats of making Canada the U.S.’s 51st state.
Not long after a photo of the sign was posted on the club’s X account, it was flagged as potentially hateful content, leading to the account’s suspension.
“@ThePenthouse604 is temporarily unavailable because it violates the X Hateful Profile Policy,” the nightclub’s X account reads.
According to the X’s “Hateful Conduct” overview, the social media platform’s policy states, “You may not directly attack other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.” It also says it prohibits behaviour that incites fear, harassment, and discrimination.
The policy, in its section about prohibiting others to discriminate, states, “This may not include content intended as political in nature, such as political commentary or content relating to boycotts or protests,” specifically excluding political commentary from the prohibition.
This is the only reference to political content in X’s “Hateful Conduct” policy.
X is owned by Elon Musk, owner of electric vehicle maker Tesla and SpaceX.
The venue has a long history of posting controversial marquees on the outside of its building.
