RCMP warn Interior B.C. residents, visitors after reports of drink spiking

By Ryan Bowles

The Elk Valley RCMP is warning people in B.C.’s interior after receiving multiple reports of alleged drink spiking in Fernie.

Police have investigated at least four reports of suspected spiking in December and January. None have been confirmed by lab results so far.

“We just want to inform and educate the public about the dangers, specifically around leaving your drinks unattended and making sure that somebody doesn’t become a potential victim of these kinds of crimes.” Corp. James Grandy of the BC RCMP told 1130 NewsRadio.

In a statement, Mounties say there’s been speculation on social media about incidents in the area involving drinks being spiked with drugs like ketamine or GHB.

Officers say no one has been seriously hurt in these incidents, but reports include symptoms of memory loss and confusion.

“A lot of these reports, and a lot of comments are being made on social media, and some of those cases have not been reported to the RCMP.”

The RCMP is asking anyone reporting these incidents to go directly to police so they can investigate the cases and help increase public safety.
