Squamish SAR make incredible rescue after BASE jumper left dangling off side of Stawamus Chief

A BASE jumper is lucky to be alive after a descent went wrong on Wednesday in Squamish.

According to Squamish Search and Rescue, the woman found herself “precariously hung” about 91 metres below the first peak of the Stawamus Chief.

“We had a call for a BASE jumper stranded on the face of the Chief about noon yesterday, and she had called for help from her precarious position on the face,” Squamish SAR spokesperson Christy Allen shared.

“Thirty-two of our members responded, along with BC Ambulance and Squamish Fire.”

A complex rope rescue was undertaken, Allen said, with crews having to set up a top rope about 100 metres above the woman. “Many, many members are required for that type of operation,” she added.

SSAR says the jumper only received minor injuries, and once the rope technician and the woman were safely lowered to the base, she was handed off to paramedics.

“Calls like this have, unfortunately, become more frequent in the past year, and we’re thankful this one ended well.” Allen adds that search and rescue teams have been called out to three calls in the past year for similar incidents.

“She was very, very lucky,” Allen said.
