A missing 18-year-old who fell through the ice on Shuswap Lake, outside of Salmon Arm, over the weekend has been found dead, the RCMP says.
On Saturday, the Salmon Arm RCMP were called after they received reports of the teen plunging into the water just after 2 p.m.
With the help of the Salmon Arm Search and Rescue, Salmon Arm Fire Department, the BC Emergency Health Services, and the RCMP’s underwater recovery team, an extensive search was undertaken.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected the family, first responders, and the community,” said Snr. Sgt. Simon Scott. “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the young man during this incredibly difficult time.”
It’s the third death in less than a week after people reportedly fell through ice. On Feb. 4, two men died after falling into a lake near Agassiz while ice fishing.
Mounties are reminding people of the dangers that frozen lakes present, especially with changing temperatures creating unpredictable ice conditions. Police say that ice that may appear stable can quickly become hazardous, putting lives at risk.
“Our officers and Search and Rescue partners have witnessed the dangers firsthand, and we cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding frozen bodies of water,” added Scott. “We urge everyone to take extreme caution and prioritize safety to prevent another tragedy.”
