For the second time in under two months, a pedestrian has been struck and killed in the same area of New Westminster. Lauren Stallone reports.

A man was killed on Tuesday night after they were struck by a commercial vehicle in New Westminster.

The New Westminster Police Department tells 1130 NewsRadio that around 7 p.m. the pedestrian was hit at McBride Boulevard and 8 Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the victim unresponsive.

“With the assistance of the BC Coroners Service and New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services, the male was removed from underneath the vehicle,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver said Wednesday.

Police say the commercial vehicle has been seized and will undergo a mechanical inspection, however, they add there is no indication at this point that there was something wrong with the vehicle. “With this being a fatal collision, we want to make sure that we’re doing a fulsome investigation to determine if anything may have been a factor.”

Leaver explained that police want to do everything they can to put the pieces together for the family of the victim.

“Right now, we’re looking to determine exactly what may have caused or led up to the cause of this crash,” Leaver said. “This was a fairly busy time of night, so we do know that there were people out there that may have seen something relevant, that have yet to speak to police.”

The driver is cooperating with the investigation, Leaver added.

“It’s one of the busier and larger intersections in our city. So, just by sheer numbers, we’re going to see more incidents in this area. We’re obviously at a colder, darker time of night, being winter, so a lot of factors may have been at play, but we don’t know what those are yet. There’s a lot of things that could have come into play last night.”

Leaver explained that the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) is also investigating. “They’ll bring the data back to our investigators to analyze, and ultimately, our detectives will put all those pieces together with the physical evidence to try and determine exactly what it was that happened.

The NWPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact police at 604-525-5411.
