The Richmond RCMP is warning residents about what Mounties are calling a trend of “distraction” thefts in the area.
The warning follows the arrest of a man suspected of an attempted theft in a parking lot near Landsdowne Road and No. 3 Road last week.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Feb. 6, the RCMP responded to a report of a theft in progress. The victim alleges she was sitting in her vehicle when a woman knocked on her window and claimed the vehicle had a punctured tire.
“When the victim exited to check the tire, the [male] suspect approached and allegedly grabbed her purse from the front seat,” Mounties explained.
When the victim confronted the alleged thief, he reportedly dropped the purse and ran.
Police say two good Samaritans stopped the suspect and held him until officers arrived on scene. He has since been charged with one count of theft.
“We have seen similar distraction thefts in the past escalate into a series of incidents. While an arrest has been made, we believe other suspects may still be at large,” said Corp. Adriana O’Malley.
Mounties believe more people may have been involved in the alleged parking lot theft. They’re asking anyone with information to contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2025-4135.
