BCLC warning public of fake casino ads

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is warning residents to be cautious of social media scams that involve websites posing as casinos.
The Crown corporation says scammers share fraudulent posts and ads, using the logos, names, and photos of real B.C. casinos.
It says the sites “may claim to offer players exclusive bonuses and promotions if [victims] register with their website or mobile application.”
BCLC says its site is the only one permitted to operate as an online gambling destination in B.C., and all BCLC social media accounts are verified with a check mark.
“While BCLC and its casino partners continue to work on having the posts removed, British Columbians should stay vigilant when it comes to these predatory and sophisticated scams.”
BCLC says you should be on alert for websites that ask for personal or financial information, carefully check the URL, and look out for the suggestion of fees or taxes to be paid on a prize.
“There are no fees or taxes on prizes won in Canada,” BCLC explained.
If you feel unsure about a site, social media account, or ad, you’re encouraged to call BCLC directly, via the Customer Support Centre at 1-866-815-0222, or using the live chat resource on corporate.bclc.com.
If you or someone you know may have already been scammed, you’re encouraged to call the police and report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
