“Police immediately evacuated the area, evacuated immediate businesses that were surrounding the mailbox in question, and then we’ve contacted our partners with the RCMP explosive disposal unit to come and assess the scene,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver told CityNews.
He says the NWPD will rely on its RCMP partners in the explosives disposal unit to prove if the suspicions were valid.
Leaver says the nearby New Westminster Secondary School was in a ‘hold and secure advisory’ while police investigated, but there was no immediate threat to the school.
Callers to 1130 NewsRadio say the affected blocks of 6th Street between 8th and 6th avenues reopened around 11:30 a.m.
Leaver suggested that the package in question was found and the explosives disposal unit would be determining next steps.

In January, New Westminster police responded to an incident near the B.C. courthouse near 6th and Carnarvon streets that was revealed to have involved the threat of an explosive device.
