A new study analyzing comments on Reddit has revealed that British Columbians are among the most clean-mouthed Canadians of any province.
The data, gathered for an Ontario online gambling company, Casino Days, comes from subreddits dedicated to Canadian cities and provinces.
It shows B.C. in the ninth spot among the ten provinces, with just 7.2 per cent of comments containing profanity.
In Quebec, pardon their lack of French, just 2.55 per cent of commentors cussed, putting the province in last place — though it’s unclear if the study accounted for the words from the sacred blue language.
Explicitly at the top of the list, Albertans are accused of using swears in 9.83 per cent of comments.
“Alberta also leads in cuss words per post (4.95), making it Canada’s undisputed champion of foul-mouthed chatter,” the study reported.
Findings show the f-word and its derivatives made up roughly a quarter of all swears used.
A study by Research Co. in 2023 found that British Columbians were third most likely to watch their language in public, and alter the way they speak so as not to swear in front of certain people — behind Ontarians and Albertans.
