Crews knock down 2 house fires in Burnaby Saturday evening; both deemed suspicious

The Burnaby Fire Department was kept busy Saturday evening battling two house fires that have both been deemed suspicious.

One of the fires was in a home in South Burnaby at 9th Avenue and Willard Street.

Staff officer Scott Allen says this fire was a fully-involved single-family dwelling.

“The residence was abandoned at the time crews arrived,” Allen said.

“The fire was deemed suspicious — due to the contents and the spread of the fire — by the on-scene incident commander.”

The second blaze was at a two-storey home with a basement, located on Whitsell Avenue near Graveley Street, which is approximately a 20-minute drive away from the first site.

“It was a fire that was unusual due to the multiple fires in the rear of the structure, and it was also deemed suspicious,” Allen said.

“As crews arrived on scene, they noticed an extension of fire in the rear of the building on the exterior side.”

Allen says nobody was displaced or injured in either fire, and both scenes are under investigation.
