A man is facing six charges related to a violent attempted robbery with a baseball bat at a store in South Vancouver Wednesday.
The Vancouver Police Department says officers were called to a retailer near Marine Drive and Ontario Street around 3 p.m., where a man allegedly entered and attempted to steal “several hundred dollars” in merchandise, including a metal baseball bat.
“When a staff member attempted to stop him, the suspect allegedly struck the worker multiple times with the bat,” the VPD said in a release Thursday.
Sgt. Steve Addison tells 1130 NewsRadio the worker “sustained quite serious injuries to the head and face” and required transport to hospital, where he is still recovering.
Police say more staff members were allegedly assaulted when they chased the suspect from the store.
A 30-year-old man is now facing one count of robbery, assault, assault causing bodily harm, and breach of a release order, as well as two counts of assault with a weapon.
Police say he remains in custody, pending a bail hearing.
“We’ve asked that he be remanded — in other words, kept in jail — as a result of this offence, because it is quite serious and because there are prior offences there,” said Addison.
Aside from the physical injuries, Addison says the victims will have to recover from the emotional trauma of being attacked.
