Police in Metro Vancouver say a man has been arrested and charged after a two-year-long investigation into two separate murders in Vancouver and Surrey.
In an update on Friday, the Vancouver Police Department says on May 26, 2022, 18-year-old Maanav Kinkar was found dead at Hazelnut Meadows Park in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood.

The Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the investigation into the killing and began looking for a suspect.

While the victims in both killings had no connection to each other, the VPD says it began working with IHIT, and the investigations eventually led officers to a sole suspect in both cases.
“Our teams worked diligently and in close partnership to solve these crimes and provide closure to the victims’ families and our communities,” said Const. Tania Visintin on Friday. “While these homicides were not connected, the cooperation between our agencies led to the evidence we needed to make this arrest.”

The VPD says 21-year-old Nahom Gizaw now faces two charges of second-degree murder in relation to the killings. Gizaw was arrested on Thursday, May 8, and remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
“The charge approval stage is a significant milestone,” says Sergeant Freda Fong, IHIT. “Our success was due to the collaboration between the VPD and IHIT whose investigators worked tirelessly to maintain the integrity of the joint investigation.”

Speaking with CityNews at Kensington Park, where Caleb spent a lot of his free time skateboarding, his mother and girlfriend tell us the legacy he left behind — his two kids, Amelia and Lincoln, now 3 and 4 years old.
“This whole park was where he was born to skateboard,” said Patrina St. Germaine, Caleb’s mother.
“It was his best thing. He loved it. He wanted to teach his kids. He wanted to go to California. He had a lot of dreams for the little guy. He didn’t even get to see him walk.”
Idalia Morrisseau, the mother of Caleb’s children, says their son is the spitting image of his father.
“He has his eye colour, his mannerism,” she said. “He’s very wild. Climbing on top of things. Very assertive for such a small little boy.”
Caleb’s unexpected death left a mark in the skateboarding community, but his memory lives on in the concrete ramps and a mural painted on Carroll Street.
“It means a lot,” St. Germaine said.
“After two years, I’m happy that they did all the work to find him justice. But I’m still rattling with what’s happening.”
Gizaw is set to make his first court appearance on May 13.
