A man has been returned to B.C. and charged with robbery after allegedly stealing a vehicle in Richmond and fleeing across the U.S. border.
According to the Richmond RCMP, Shawn Douglas Bergstrom allegedly stole a Toyota Tacoma after threatening the owner with a knife on No. 3 Road on December 12, 2024.
When police responded to a call about the robbery, officers located the vehicle on Highway 99, but the driver refused to stop.

During the pursuit, “there were no other vehicles damaged or individuals injured,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley with the Richmond RCMP in an update Tuesday.
Ultimately, American law enforcement stopped and arrested the suspect. The accused had since been held in custody south of the border.
“CBP air assets were deployed and assisted with the pursuit,” reported Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding back in December in a post on X.
Bergstrom was returned to Canada on June 10 by U.S. officials, Richmond Mounties said on Tuesday.
Back in Canada, he has been charged with one count of robbery at knifepoint and has been remanded in custody following a court appearance on June 11.
His next court appearance is scheduled for June 26.
“With the support of our US partners, we were able to bring this high-profile case to a safe and successful resolution,” said Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan in a written statement.
