Metro Vancouver gas prices expected to drop ahead of Canada Day

As tensions begin to ease in the Middle East, the price of gas has begun to drop in Metro Vancouver.

A litre of regular gas was in the mid-$1.70s range at the start of the week. The price dropped into the $1.60s range by Wednesday and is now in the low-$1.50s range in some areas.

Analyst Patrick de Haan at GasBuddy says that’s close to where the price per litre was before the most recent attacks in Israel and Iran.

“What goes up eventually does come down. And so I do expect that gas prices will continue to slowly go down around the Lower Mainland and across Metro Vancouver — really, much of Canada, where prices did go up significantly,” said de Haan.

He says the price at the pump should drop even more by Canada Day, assuming conflict in the Middle East is de-escalating.

As hurricane season begins, de Haan says the West Coast is insulated from the worst effects, but issues with oil refineries could “flare up” at any time.

“Thankfully, there’s been a lot of additional supply coming into the West Coast from areas like Singapore and Asia,” said de Haan.

In Vancouver, gas has been spotted as low as $1.479 per litre on Thursday.
