IIO: officer did not commit offence after man shot by Richmond RCMP in 2024

B.C.’s police oversight agency has concluded an investigation in Richmond after an officer was stabbed and a man was shot by Mounties last summer.
On Aug. 23, 2024, the BC RCMP said the Richmond RCMP received a request for assistance from firefighters after a man allegedly set a sign on fire in front of a home along Glenthorne Drive.
Police say the man was “uncooperative,” adding a struggle between him and officers led to the stabbing and subsequent shooting.
“The man and police officer were both transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services to be treated for what are believed to be serious injuries,” the BC RCMP said in a release at the time.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was notified of the incident shortly after and began investigating.
The IIO is deployed anytime someone is badly hurt or injured in an interaction with police.
In an update Friday, the IIO says the investigation has ended and has determined that “there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.”
Its conclusion comes after the Chief Civilian Director reviewed the evidence, including video, witness statements, medical evidence, and police reports, the IIO says.
The agency says a public report will not be published until court proceedings are complete.
