Squamish base jumper rescued after crashing into mountain wall

The team was guided to the launch site by a friend of the base jumper.

After locating the man on a small rock feature 60 feet below the edge, the Squamish team requested support from a helicopter and the North Shore Rescue (NSR) team, which has night vision capabilities

“The man was wet and cold, but he was conscious,” SSR spokesperson Christy Allen told 1130 NewsRadio.

Together, they decided that “the steep and rough terrain would make a stretcher carry extremely challenging,” the SSR said in a social media post.

With the aid of the helicopter, the team performed a hoist extraction of the young man.

Allen says that stretcher carry would have taken hours, probably into the morning.

The base jumper was “very fortunate, sustaining injuries to both ankles but otherwise doing well,” Allen said.

Once the man was in a safe terrain, the BC Emergency Health Services transported him to the Squamish General Hospital.

Allen wants to remind people that it is already winter in the mountains. Therefore, it is even more important to be prepared when venturing into nature as the days are getting shorter and colder.
