VPD increasing presence at Jewish community events following Australia shooting

The Vancouver Police Department says it is taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of those taking part in events within the Jewish Community over the holidays.

This comes after at least 16 people were killed and 38 others injured in a terrorist attack at a Jewish holiday event in Australia Sunday. Authorities are calling the attack an act of antisemitic terrorism against the Jewish community.

Additional resources are being sent to the menorah lighting event at the Vancouver Art Gallery Sunday evening, as well as at synagogues and Jewish schools and community centres.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver says it has been in touch with the VPD.

“Local law enforcement has confirmed there is no known threat to our community at this time, and we continue to monitor the situation together,” it posted on X.
