The maternity unit at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge is closed through the weekend, and some care providers are concerned for the safety of expectant parents.
The Fraser Health Authority announced this week that for 96 hours between 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, and 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, patients will be diverted to other sites, citing shortages of OBGYNs.

We are truly sorry for any added stress this may bring,” said the health authority. “The most important thing is a safe delivery for both parent and baby, and these steps are in place to ensure you receive safe, uninterrupted care.”
Santaya Stander, a doula who provides support through childbirth in the Fraser Valley, tells 1130 NewsRadio that diverting anyone in labour to another hospital is not ideal, because minutes matter during pregnancy.
“That assumes transportation is available — ambulances and clear roads. Longer travel times mean worse outcomes,” Stander explained.
She says even low-risk pregnancies can become high-risk under the right — or wrong — circumstances.
“You can’t schedule pregnancy emergencies, and an ambulance is transport, not treatment. Low risk doesn’t mean no risk.”
The health authority warned that a similar temporary diversion could happen at White Rock’s Peace Arch Hospital over the holiday season.
“The timing of potential future maternity diversions is dynamic as we collaborate with our physician group to proactively address staffing gaps. Occasionally, we must also respond on short notice to cover unexpected absences due to sick calls,” said Fraser Health.
Patients are asked to call the units at both hospitals before trying to visit.
