IIO BC called in after man dies in Prince Rupert

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is investigating after a man died in Prince Rupert Friday.

The BC RCMP says it responded to a call involving an alleged assault at a home on Pillsbury Avenue near the Yellowhead Highway shortly before 2:30 p.m.

According to Mounties, officers spoke to the complainant before approaching the man.

“Very shortly after making contact with the suspect, an interaction occurred in which a conducted energy weapon was deployed,” the RCMP said.

“At some point during the interaction and while police were securing the suspect, the man went unconscious.”

The IIO says BC Emergency Health Services took the man to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No other injuries have been reported.

The RCMP says it will not be releasing any further information while the incident is being investigated.

The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
