Metro Vancouver under fog advisory

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a fog advisory Wednesday morning for Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey.

The agency says near-zero visibility fog is expected to descend on an area as far north as Horseshoe Bay, as far east as Aldergrove, as far south as Tsawwassen, and as far west as Point Grey.

“A ridge of high pressure is settling over the Vancouver region. Cool, humid marine air is trapped under a warm, stagnant airmass aloft. This results in widespread fog across Metro Vancouver,” said the ECCC website.

The ‘yellow-level’ fog advisory is expected to last through the late morning when temperatures rise.

1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Carl Lam says the fog is the first of a “soggy start to the new year.”

“Looks like we’ll have a few good rounds of rain headed our way for Friday and Saturday. Each day we’re expecting about 10 to 20 millimetres of rain, and some of those showers will linger into Sunday morning before things start to dry out,” said Lam.

He says the rain will be complemented by above-average temperatures. But that’s not all.

“Another thing I’m keeping my eye on, not just the rain for the weekend, but also some really gusty winds for Saturday into Sunday morning, where those gusts could be between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour, especially if you’re right by the coast.”

While the fog lasts, ECCC says low visibility will make conditions dangerous, and travellers should allow extra time to reach their destinations.
