Windstorm causes massive power outages in Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver

By CityNews Staff

Tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the Lower Mainland were without power Thursday morning following an overnight windstorm.

Chilliwack was hit hardest, but there were also outages throughout the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, Hope, Mission and Kent, and elsewhere in North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Surrey.

On Wednesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a yellow-level advisory of winds gusting up to 90 kilometres per hour in the eastern Fraser Valley.

“Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible,” the agency warned. It has since rescinded the advisory.

BC Hydro says its crews would work to “complete repairs and restore service” overnight and through the morning.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, just fewer than 9,000 BC Hydro customers are without power in the Lower Mainland.
