Anyone planning to hit the trails on the Grouse Grind Monday may want to reconsider.
The popular Vancouver attraction is behind union picket lines as of 6 a.m., the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees’ Union (GVRDEU) says.
The union says its members, who provide a variety of important services at the park, are walking off the job. This includes unionized Park Rangers who patrol the area.
“Our union members keep the Grouse Grind in top condition for those who hike this popular trail, and we are asking users to take a day off from the Grind and the Park,” said GVRDEU president Jesse Medeiros.
“This job action is to put pressure on Metro Vancouver management to return to bargaining without preconditions.”
Madeiros says they haven’t had a contract in 17 months, and no new talks are scheduled.
Grouse Grind isn’t the only park being targeted by picketers. Deas Island Regional Park in Delta and Derby Reach Regional Park in Langley will also see similar action.
Members’ main sticking points are health and safety, contracting work, and recruitment and retention.
The union says the strike could escalate further.
