Dozens displaced after blaze at Chilliwack apartment, fire crews say

Several residents were displaced after a blaze at an apartment building Wednesday evening, the Chilliwack Fire Department says.

Firefighters were called to a building in the area of Spadina Avenue and Mary Street shortly before 7:30 p.m.

“While en route, responding crews observed smoke coming from a three-storey apartment building and upgraded the response to a second alarm structure fire,” the fire department said.

“Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and fire at the rear of the building and occupants actively evacuating.”

A search for occupants was conducted while the fire was being knocked down inside the building, Chilliwack Fire says. Around 70 firefighters were called to the scene, with all six of the city’s firehalls responding.

“One resident and one firefighter sustained injuries and were assessed by BC Emergency Health Services,” the department said.

“Firefighters also rescued a cat from the building and provided emergency care on scene before it was reunited with its owner.”

There was significant damage throughout the structure, particularly on the third floor, it said.

The cause is under investigation.
