English Bay Barge cost Vancouver $66,000

Vancouver’s former beloved tourist attraction, the ‘English Bay Barge,’ cost the city thousands of dollars for security and removal. Now, the city is trying to claw it back.

The barge broke free during a storm in November 2021 and ended up near the city’s West End Sunset Beach. It took nearly a year for Transport Canada to remove the barge as attempts to pull it off the rocks originally failed.

The City of Vancouver tells CityNews that it incurred more than $66,000 in related costs because of the English Bay Barge and is “actively pursuing reimbursement for its costs via the barge owner’s representative.”

CityNews asked The City of Vancouver if they have pursued legal action but they did not provide an answer.

This news comes after another barge broke loose in English Bay on Sunday, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.

Coast guard vessels successfully held the barge off the beach for about 30 minutes, until the Seaspan tug Cates VIII arrived to tow it away.

CityNews has reached out to the owners of the barge from 2021 but has not heard back.
