Gas meter damage in Maple Ridge leads to evacuations

The City of Maple Ridge alerted the public to what they called a “gas leak” closing 224 Street between 117 Avenue and Callaghan Avenue in both ways on Wednesday around noon.

FortisBC told CityNews that it was not a gas leak but a gas meter had been damaged by an “external party.”

The statement said the road was shut down so that FortisBC crews could respond.

Three nearby apartment buildings were evacuated and Emergency Support Services are available to them.

The City of Maple Ridge asks that people avoid the area, use alternate routes and respect the directions of fire and traffic management crews.
