Aunt Leah’s Christmas tree lot marks 20th year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With just two more weeks left until Christmas, tree lots will be buzzing this weekend, with lots of people anxious to get their homes dressed up for the holidays.

Aunt Leah’s is one non-profit organization marking its twentieth year selling trees to help get young men and women on their feet.

Paul Stewart has been running the Aunt Leah’s tree lots since the first one opened on Granville Street in Vancouver in 1994.

Stewart says people seem to buying earlier and earlier, and some trees have been going faster than others.

“Because they buy earlier, they tend to buy a higher quality tree, so something like a Fraser or a noble fir, which has much better needle retention,” he explains that it’s been the smaller ones people have been after. “Five, six feet, there have been a lot of sales at that height, so, and it seems to be you know, people say, I have a condominium, I don’t have a lot of space, so yeah, I can take a certain height but not too wide.”

Money from Aunt Leah’s four lots in Metro Vancouver goes toward programs that help youth who are about to age out of foster care, and young mothers.
