VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Occupy movement has a new target: Christmas.
Consumers are being urged not to shop at all this holiday season. The push comes from Vancouver-based Adbusters Magazine, which provided the initial inspiration for the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Adbusters is rolling out Occupy Christmas on November 25th on the 20th annual “Buy Nothing Day,” which also happens to be the date when US Black Friday falls this year.
The magazine says the it gave the world a new way to think about fat cats and financial pirates on Wall Street, and now it wants to do the same to the holidays.
A message on the Adbusters website reads:
You’ve been sleeping on the streets for two months pleading peacefully for a new spirit in economics. And just as your camps are raided, your eyes pepper sprayed and your head’s knocked in, another group of people are preparing to camp-out. Only these people aren’t here to support occupy Wall Street, they’re here to secure their spot in line for a Black Friday bargain at Super Target and Macy’s.
The campaign also has a number of calls to action, including joining a credit union, putting up Adbusters posters, and organizing a Santa sit-in.
