Fraser Valley braces for spike in mosquito population

FRASER VALLEY (NEWS1130) – Expect a lot more mosquitoes in the Fraser Valley this summer.

Morrow BioScience has been commissioned by the Fraser Valley Regional District to help keep the bugs under control.

“We are attempting to target the islands. The islands along the Fraser River corridor…produce a lot of mosquitoes. So we’ve focused a lot of efforts on those spots because they’re huge and they produce a ton,” explains the company’s Dirk Lewis.

They spray with a bacterial product that only targets the mosquitoes and doesn’t hurt any other wildlife. He says they have already been out spraying, but it’s still going to be a very bad season.

“The mosquitoes that we have targeted are flood water mosquitoes. So the more flood water, the more potential for mosquitoes,” adds Lewis.

He says the larval cycle happens in the water, and as the water disappears, that’s when we start seeing more of them.

Lewis advises people wear light-coloured, long sleeve shirts to avoid getting bit, and to try and keep standing water off your property.
