New “Salish” apple variety unveiled in BC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You can now find a new apple variety at a store near you.

A born-in-BC and raised-in-the-Okanagan apple has been revealed at the the UBC Apple Festival. John Kingsmill with the Okanagan Plant Improvement Corporation says the Salish apple is best described as “very juicy, slightly tangy, crisp, and a lovely eating experience.”

“This new apple was formally known as SP493,” he explains. “It’s a cross between Splendor and Gala apples… the original cross of this variety was done about 32 years ago; it takes that long for an apple, from first cross until a decision is made to commercialize it.”

“The naming of the apple is the prerogative of the apple breeder at the research station in Summerland and the apple breeder chose ‘Salish.’ We have a number of apple varieties that have names that reflect first nations background in British Columbia,” adds Kingsmill.

The apples will be available at about two dozen stores around the Lower Mainland.
